Shortlist’s Forecasting Green Jobs in Africa Report

When it comes to job creation for youth, green jobs play a key role in providing accessible and sustainable opportunities, especially in Africa.  At CFYE, they have become a prevalent component of our portfolio, significantly contributing to preserving or restoring environmental quality and preventing future harm to our planet’s ecosystems. These jobs not only protect the environment but also enhance the wellbeing of individuals and communities.

In this report, our Kenyan IP, Shortlist, in collaboration with BCG and FSDAfrica, present the first pan-African forecast for near-term direct job creation in select green sectors, aimed at educators, training institutions, staffing firms, and policymakers. It serves as a foundation for further research on labour demand across different sectors, regions, and timeframes, highlighting the critical role of human capital in green economic growth and the need to address demanded skills and potential mismatches.

To gain a deeper understanding of job quality for young people, especially young women, this research was conducted in Kenya’s waste-recycling sector. The magazine presents the findings of this youth-centred research, focusing on job quality, gender disparities, and retention.
